Vortex II at Rochester Cathedral (abstract figurative sculpture) by sculptor Ian Campbell-Briggs

VORTEX II AT ROCHESTER CATHEDRAL

(Figurative and Abstract Sculpture)

The sculpture is part of a series of four. The sculpture is related to Liminal Space and Fallen IV. A modelled terracotta figure is supported on four forms. The central constructed planar steel element is the wing forms turned into a conical volute without the negative space. The sculpture was placed at the South Quire Transept in front of the decorated Chapter Door dating from about 1300. The figure complements the carving around the arch and the corrugated texture of the conical form echoes the relief carving on the door. Vortex II was exhibited at Rochester Cathedral.
